Pepper

Overview

Pepper is the dried unripe fruit grown in the plant called piper nigrum. It's pungent smell, peppery/hot taste and health friendly properties make pepper a favorite spice all over the world and it is commonly used in all cuisines. A botanical fruit would have at least one seed and grow from the flower of the plant. With this definition in mind, peppers are classified as fruit because they contain tiny seeds in the middle and grow from the flower of the pepper plant.

Peppers have a long growing season (60 to 90 days).

Performance

Pepper is the second most cultivated vegetable in Nigeria, and is an important part of the country's diet.

Challenges

The problems found out in pepper development are shortage of superior varieties in production centers, very high attack of pest and deseases, climate change and the shortage of farmers mastering the technology.

Pepper reduce the risk of cataracts and macular degeneration., reduce the likelihood of anaemia., it protect against certain chronic diseases, delay age-related memory loss. And it prevents blood-sugar lowering effects.
